Giannis Antetokounmpo, the reigning league MVP, finally has a signature shoe to match his freakish talent. The mythical Nike Zoom Freak 1 was released on June 29, 2019, and became sold out including his Freak shirt the same day it was released.
Prior to his signature sneaker days, The Greek Freak wore shoes from Kobe Bryant’s signature line, preferring the Kobe X elites for several seasons. He then skipped the Kobe 11s and original Kobe ADs before catching up to the rest of the league and switching to the Kobe AD Mids and then the Nike Kobe AD Exodus for the 2018-19 season.
Nike CEO Mark Parker said Antetokounmpo’s shoe, the Nike Air Zoom Freak 1, became the largest initial signature launch in the Nike’s basketball history. Parker also said Antetokounmpo’s apparel line “sold out quickly” and the Freak T-shirt became the top-selling apparel item on Nike.com.
The design of the shoe and apparel, along with the signature logos, honor Antetokounmpo’s parents and four brothers and represent his family’s path from Nigeria to Greece, and then from Athens to Milwaukee.
